Q: Define the following pharmaceutical ingredients with example.
Ans:
(i) Diluents: Diluents are fillers designed to make up the required bulk of the tablet when the drug dosage itself is inadequate to produce this bulk.
Ex: • Starch
Lactose
Sucrose
Mannitol
(ii) Binders and adhesives: The materials which are added during wet granulation to form granules or to promote the cohesive properties.
Ex: • Acacia
Tragacanth
Ethycellulose
(iii) Disintegrant: The materials which are added in tablet formulation to facilitate the break up or disintegration when it contacts with water.
Ex: • Starch
Microcrystalline cellulose
Sodium alginate
Lactose
(iv) Lubricant/Antiadherents: The materials which are added to reduce the friction
between the walls of the tablet and the walls of the die cavity.
Ex: Stearic acid
Magnesium stearate
Purified talc
(v) Glydant: The materials which are intended to promote the flow properties of powder mixture.
Ex: Colloidal silica
Cornstarch
