Differentiate between suspension & emulsion

Q: Define suspension. What are the qualities of a good suspension?

Ans:
Suspension:
Suspension may be defined as biphasic liquid dosage form of medicament in which the finely divided solid particles ranging from 0.5 to 5.0 micron are suspended or dispersed in a liquid semisolid vehicle.
Qualities of a good suspension:
(i) The dispersed particles should not be settle readily & the settled particles should redisperse easily on shaking.
(ii) The particles should not form a cake on setting.
(iii) The viscosity should be such that the preparation can be easily poured.
(iv) It should be chemically stable.

Q: Differentiate between suspension  & emulsion.

Ans: Differences between suspension & emulsion:

Suspension
Emulsion
(i) Biphasic liquid dosage form of  medicament in which the finely divided solid particles ranges from 0.5 to 5.0 micron are suspended in liquid or semisolid vehicles.
(i) Biphasic liquid dosage form of medicament in which two immiscible liquids are made miscible by the addition of third substance called emulgent.

(ii) Solid-liquid dispersion.
(ii) Liquid-liquid dispersion.
(iii) The solid particles do not form coalescence.
(iii) The droplets form coalescence when they come together.
(iv) Two types of suspensions flocculated and de-flocculated.
(iv) Two types of emulsions 0/W types & W/0 type
(v) Suspensions , are stable toward coalescence.
(v) Emulsions are meta-stable product.

Q: Why dispersing agents are used in suspension?
Ans: In some substances where the surface energy is not sufficient the particles may come together & form larger particles. To overcome this difficulty the dispersing agents are used. This agents increase the zeta potential.
